Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan, located in Central Asia, is largely a desert country. Irrigation is available to promote the cultivation of crops and, thus, about 90% of the cultivated land receives water. Cotton is planted on around 50% of the irrigated land, making it the 10th largest cotton producer in the world. Other cultivated crops include wheat, millet, sesame, barley, corn, wine grapes, vegetables, melons and alfalfa. Livestock are raised including horses, cattle and camels. Turkmenistan has rich deposits of mineral resources including natural gas and oil. Other resources of the country are salt, lignite, coal, sulfur, phosphate and iodine. |
